What is a height calculator?

A height calculator converts a measurement of height from one unit to another. It can help express a person's height, an object's height or another vertical measurement in a preferred unit system.

Centimeters are commonly used in countries that follow the metric system, while feet and inches are frequently used for personal height in the United States and some other regions.

This tool accepts measurements in centimeters, inches or decimal feet and displays equivalent results.

Centimeters

Enter height in metric units and convert to inches or feet.

Inches

Convert a total-inch measurement to centimeters and feet-and-inches.

Decimal feet

Convert values such as 5.75 feet to other height formats.

How to use the height calculator

  1. Enter your height. Type a non-negative number in the Height field.
  2. Select the input unit. Choose Centimeters, Inches or Decimal feet.
  3. Calculate. Select Calculate to view your converted height.
  4. Review the result. Check centimeters, inches and feet-and-inches.
  5. Copy or save. Use the available result controls if needed.
Important: The input field accepts decimal feet, not a combined feet-and-inches notation. For example, 5 feet 9 inches equals 5.75 decimal feet, not 5.9 feet.

Height conversion formulas

Height conversion uses fixed relationships between international inches, feet and metric centimeters.

Standard conversion factors

1 inch = exactly 2.54 centimeters

1 foot = exactly 12 inches

1 foot = exactly 30.48 centimeters

Centimeters to inches

Inches = Centimeters ÷ 2.54

Inches to centimeters

Centimeters = Inches × 2.54

Centimeters to decimal feet

Decimal feet = Centimeters ÷ 30.48

Decimal feet to centimeters

Centimeters = Decimal feet × 30.48

Feet and inches to centimeters

Centimeters = (Feet × 12 + Inches) × 2.54

Worked example: Convert 175 cm to feet and inches

Example inputs

  • Height: 175
  • Input unit: Centimeters

First, convert centimeters to total inches:

175 ÷ 2.54 = 68.8976378 inches.

Next, divide the total inches by 12:

68.8976378 ÷ 12 ≈ 5.74147 feet.

This contains 5 complete feet. The remaining inches are:

68.8976378 − (5 × 12) = 8.8976378 inches.

Result: 175 cm ≈ 5 ft 8.90 in.

Rounded to the nearest whole inch, this is approximately 5 ft 9 in.

Decimal feet vs feet and inches

Decimal feet and feet-and-inches are two different ways to write the same type of length.

In decimal feet, the fractional part represents a fraction of one foot. In feet-and-inches, the inches are expressed separately.

Example: 5.75 decimal feet

5.75 feet = 5 feet + 0.75 foot.

0.75 × 12 = 9 inches.

Therefore, 5.75 feet = 5 ft 9 in.

Entering 5.9 decimal feet instead would represent 5 feet and 10.8 inches, not 5 feet and 9 inches.

How to measure height accurately

  1. Stand on a flat, level surface without shoes.
  2. Keep your back straight and look forward naturally.
  3. Use a wall-mounted measuring scale or suitable height-measuring device.
  4. Position the measuring edge horizontally at the top of the head.
  5. Read the measurement and record the unit used.

For consistent comparisons, measure under similar conditions and use the same method each time.

Accuracy and rounding

The relationships between inches, feet and centimeters are exact under the international unit definitions.

However, displayed calculator results may be rounded for readability. For example, 175 cm is approximately 68.8976 inches, often shown as 5 feet 9 inches when rounded to the nearest whole inch.

When accuracy matters, use the unrounded value or retain an appropriate number of decimal places.

Common height conversion mistakes

  • Confusing decimal feet with feet-and-inches notation.
  • Treating 5.9 feet as 5 feet 9 inches.
  • Rounding inches too early.
  • Entering inches while the unit dropdown is set to centimeters.
  • Using an estimated measurement as though it were exact.

Limitations of this height calculator

This tool performs height unit conversions. It does not estimate future adult height, evaluate growth patterns or assess whether a height is medically typical.

If you need a health-related assessment, height alone is not sufficient. Age, medical context and other measurements may be relevant.
